Durante 81 años, un ferrocarril unió las tierras altas de Boquete con el Pacífico, transportó café, banano y pasajeros, y dio origen a docenas de pueblos en la provincia más occidental de Panamá.
For 81 years, a railway linked the highlands of Boquete to the Pacific, hauled coffee, bananas, and passengers, and gave rise to dozens of towns in Panama's westernmost province.

El Ferrocarril Nacional de Chiriquí fue inaugurado el 22 de abril de 1916 por el presidente Belisario Porras Barahona, quien había impulsado los estudios desde 1913. En su discurso ante la multitud davideña, Porras declaró que aquella obra representaba «un paso firme hacia el progreso, capaz de igualar las proezas de los héroes de la mitología griega».
The Chiriquí National Railway was inaugurated on 22 April 1916 by President Belisario Porras Barahona, who had championed the project since 1913. Addressing the crowd in David, Porras declared that the railway represented "a firm step toward progress, equal to the feats of the heroes of Greek mythology."
Lo que comenzó con un contrato firmado el 3 de febrero de 1914 entre el gobierno de Porras y la R. W. Hebard & Co. —cuatro ramales saliendo de la estación de David hacia Pedregal, La Concepción, Boquete y Potrerillos— se convirtió, con la extensión a Puerto Armuelles autorizada por la Ley 27 de 1924 e inaugurada en 1929, en el sistema ferroviario provincial más extenso del país. En su época de esplendor (1930-1950), el FNCH alcanzó 158 kilómetros de vía y dio nombre y forma a los pueblos del occidente chiricano.
What began with a contract signed on 3 February 1914 between the Porras administration and R. W. Hebard & Co. —four branches radiating from the David station to Pedregal, La Concepción, Boquete, and Potrerillos— grew, with the Puerto Armuelles extension authorized by Law 27 of 1924 and opened in 1929, into the country's most extensive provincial rail system. At its peak (1930–1950), the FNCH ran 158 kilometres of track and gave name and shape to the towns of western Chiriquí.
