About

The Ferrocarril Nacional de Chiriquí was inaugurated on April 22, 1916, by President Belisario Porras. Built at a cost of $21 million with 95% of shares held by the National City Bank of New York, the 3-foot gauge railroad connected four branches radiating from David: to Boquete (45.1 km), to La Concepción (29 km, later extended to Puerto Armuelles), to Pedregal (6.5 km), and from Dolega to Potrerillos (12.1 km). The railroad was vital for banana transport by the United Fruit Company and reached ~160 km of track at its peak. Passenger service ended in 1988, and operations ceased entirely around 1990.
